Artistic cycling and construction – I am a world championship runner-up and an engineer

As a development engineer at B&W Engineering and as runner-up in the world championships and German champion in artistic cycling, I am a pretty good example of the wide range of opportunities that B&W offers its employees to combine professional ambitions with personal passions.

Artistic cycling

Artistic cycling, often referred to simply as artistic cycling, is a fascinating and challenging discipline in cycling that combines artistic elements with cycling mastery. In this sport, athletes perform a series of artistic exercises and figures on special, usually fixed-gear bicycles, similar to rhythmic gymnastics or figure skating. The performances can be carried out by individuals, pairs or teams.

My career at B&W began with an internship in 2022, which resulted from my studies. After a successful internship, I moved into a position as a working student and eventually wrote my master’s thesis in the field of development. These experiences gave me great insights into the practical work of an engineer and clearly showed me how B&W supports individual career paths through flexible working models. I have been working as a development engineer at B&W since mid-April 2024.

I currently work 80% of regular working hours, which allows me to complete my intensive training in artistic cycling. My weekly training programme includes three to four three-hour sessions of technical training as well as additional sessions for running, agility and strength training. There are also competitions and training sessions with the national team at the weekends. The flexibility of the working model is crucial for me to be able to train at a high level and at the same time develop innovative solutions at B&W as an engineer. Finding this balance is often a challenge, but thanks to the support of B&W, I am able to pursue both professional and sporting goals and give my best in both areas.

More Information

In my everyday life, time management is essential in order to fulfil the demands of my job and my hobby. A typical day starts early, often as early as 6am, to make the most of the working day. At B&W, I usually start work at around 7am, which gives me the flexibility to adapt my working day to suit my training schedule. On days when I have training, I finish my work duties earlier so that I have enough time to prepare for the technical training in the sports hall and train optimally. B&W makes it possible for me to schedule training sessions such as running or strength training during working hours without jeopardising my professional performance. In the evenings, I often dedicate myself to flexibility and strength training, which I do at home. Despite the tight schedule, thanks to effective planning and the great support of my employer, I manage to pursue my passion and achieve the best possible results in both areas – work and sport.
