Impact of the EU Battery Regulation on Product Development at B&W

The introduction of the EU Battery Regulation – EU Regulation 2023/1542 – is necessary with regard to climate protection and is supported by us. It offers new opportunities, but also requires additional efforts to comply with the regulation. As part of the “European Green Deal”, the regulation came into force on 18.02.2024 and has become valid in all EU member states. Especially as a provider of engineering services in device, medical and automotive technology, we have to deal with the topic – the associated new requirements in product development, as well as the take-back and recycling of battery waste.

What exactly will change?
The EU Battery Regulation contains clear requirements regarding the durability, performance, removal and recycling of batteries. We dealt with this emerging topic at an early stage and saw it as an opportunity to further expand our expertise and knowledge in the field of battery technology. This is exactly where we come in and contribute our expertise by optimizing the ambient temperatures of batteries. System simulations enable us to calculate exactly in which temperature ranges the battery is operated. This can prevent the maximum temperature from being exceeded – which would lead to a decrease in performance and thus to the premature replacement of the battery. In this way, we ensure that our customers’ products comply with the requirements of the regulation and at the same time offer the aspect of sustainability. The EU Battery Regulation also combines two important requirements for the design of portable batteries: the tightening of the requirements for removal and the requirement that interchangeability must be ensured.

The regulation specifies that a battery is considered replaceable if it can be removed and replaced with a comparable battery without affecting the device.

Taking these requirements into account, we focus on creating technical solutions that comply with legal requirements and at the same time enable easy handling for the end user from the early stage of product development. Our experience in the design of battery packs and devices helps us to ensure that batteries are installed in such a way that they can be removed and replaced without much effort. This design extends the service life of the overall system and improves its ecological balance. Although the EU Battery Regulation presents us with new tasks, it also opens up new paths and offers the opportunity to develop innovations.

Our ability to provide precise calculations and innovative design solutions helps our customers develop products that comply with regulatory requirements. In addition, the aspect of efficiency and sustainability is taken into account, making the products more environmentally friendly.
